I hadn't seen this thread before this evening, but I tried the rules (as originally published) today, and wrote a report on my blog:
LinkI didn't find them satisfactory as written, but can see that they might play OK with some work. Passage of lines would help, and a smoother melee system, where units don't stay locked together attacking each other on alternate turns. I dropped the straight ahead move requirement as well, allowing units to move within 45 degrees of their facing, so long as their facing doesn't change. I's also allow a wheel to just be part of a normal move.
Agree with most of the changes above - rifled artillery getting longer range only, for example. I wouldn't impose the 'Over half range' penalty on smoothbore muskets either - too fiddly with a 3" range.
