Homebrew revision of the Pz8 Sci-Fi rules

Here are the homebrew rules I have created based on the awesome Pz8 Sci-Fi rule set. Please note that this is a work in progress and many of these rules have not been play tested yet.

I actually have two sets of rules, one uses just d6 and the one I am attaching here uses d8’s and d10’s as well. I stopped working on the d6 rules when I added the other dice so it is a little out of date, but can upload it if there is interest.

I’d like to point out that changes made to the movement, indirect fire rules, and other areas should not be seen as a criticism of the original rules, but simply clarifications or instructions that my group found helpful. Finally, I see that my rules have the reverse order for Suppression and Disorganization that other rule sets have. I'm not sure if this is based on an older set of Pz8 rules or if I made the change to fall in line with other games I have played. Hope this doesn't cause too much confusion.

I look forward to any comments or criticism anyone may have regarding these rules. (Don’t worry I can take it. I’m employed in a job that involves providing technical source material for documents that get rejected for re-writes all the time.)

Note: Put a newer version out 7-11-13 with a major change to the Rally section and some other minor clean up.

Manycubes,
I like the ability to have different tech levels.  Next free game time I get, I might pull out my DAK 1/285 stuff and have Rommel vs some invading aliens.  Will pass along how it goes...

Thanks for the reply.

You're probably familiar with Harry Turtledove's epic series about an alien invasion during WW2, but this link might prove inspirational to others who haven't heard of it. I like his reasoning for why the aliens tech was just advanced enough to be better, but not overwhelming and that's what I've tried to shoot for in my rules as well.

I like a lot the idea of different tech levels! It could be the basis of a "universal" rules set... from ancients to sci-fi... mumble.... mumble....

Tomorrow's War uses different 'Troop Quality' levels and represent them, with D6, D8, D10 & D12 dice.

Worth a look, for some ideas!

In your example of creating a unit you have TL 8 Heavy MBT: 6+20+8+18+4+8+10(Armd)+5(tracked)... etc., but I didn't see in the costs where the 10(Armd) comes from.

Everything else looks great and I'm eager to give this a try. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something that's going to affect the balance.

Thanks

Hey thanks for checking out my take on the Pz8 Sci-Fi rules.

Good catch on the (Armd) point cost. It is from an earlier version of the rules and I forgot to remove it.

I've corrected that and made a few other changes, please find a copy of my latest edition below. I am looking forward to any suggestions you have based off your play sessions.

This is a very interesting off shoot of Pz8's rules. I will have to give them a try next time we have a gaming day.

Pz8's inspirational rule sets have really sharpened my focus when it comes to game design. I’m looking forward to improving this homage to his Sci-Fi rules through everyone’s playtest comments.

I'm still not happy with the point cost for units and am trying different formulas. I think an MBT should cost at least twice as much as an infantry unit, but at this point that's more of a gut feeling than one born of actual testing or numbers crunching.
